This past month, our hardworking Bernard Betel Centre staff and volunteers have been busy! We are continuing to call and check-in on our membership, Healthy at Home participants, and Door to Door clients. Our program staff have developed a wonderful calendar of online programs for May through Zoom and Facebook Live. Our Meals on Wheels team has been busier than ever cooking, packing, labeling, and delivering over 1,000 meals each week to older adults in the community.

In mid-April, The Bernard Betel Centre team was inspired by United Way Greater Toronto, and sent our (virtual!) LOVE and THANKS on our Facebook page to all the frontline heroes, including our very own Bernard Betel Centre frontline heroes, for all they do and everything they face to help our community during this pandemic.

We continue to update our COVID-19 resource page as more programs and services become available. Keep up-to-date with on everything going on at the Bernard Betel Centre by visiting our website, and connecting with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Online Virtual Programs

Our April online virtual programs were very well attended! Thank you to everyone that took part. Some highlights include Memory Boosters, Art Appreciation, Spanish, and our well attended Facebook Live programs including Maria's Monday Fitness Classes, and our 'living room' concert series with Jerry Rush and Dave Giles.

In May, we have an EXCITING line up for you! We have Tea with Gail (May 5), Cooking Club (every Wednesday), "Let's Talk About Feet" with Betel's Chiropodist Theeba (May 12), Lifelong Learning Courses, Seniors' Centre Without Walls (phone-in programs), more Facebook Live 'living room' concerts with Dave Giles (May 10) and David Skolnick (May 17), and Fitness with Maria (every Monday). Join us from the comfort of your home! A full list of our programs can be found HERE including our May Virtual Programming Calendar

Thank You to Our Volunteer Team!

It has been seven weeks since we closed our doors to the public, but through innovation and determination, our connection and commitment to our members and clients remains strong. We thank the volunteers, many of who are on the frontline, that are working to keep the Betel Centre's spirit alive and bright! Here are some of the many ways they are meeting the challenge:

  • Volunteers and staff have reached out to their personal networks to recruit family and friends to volunteer to assist with meal delivery to ensure the most isolated and vulnerable individuals do not go hungry.
  • Through online virtual programs, our volunteers are leading classes and programs in Spanish and French, providing musical entertainment, and one instructor is generously sharing her skills and offering a free virtual art program.
  • Our Friendly Visiting and Home Respite volunteers stay connected with their clients by providing regular telephone visits in place of in-home visits.
  • Volunteers are connecting with our members by phone on a regular basis to provide a 'check-in', help reduce social isolation and loneliness, and connect them with the resources they need.
  • Our new corporate partner, CAA South Central Ontario, has stepped forward to join our Meals on Wheels volunteer team by assisting in the delivery of meals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has been a time of learning, adaptation and new experiences for our volunteers, but the team has stepped up. They have gained a better understanding and compassion for others, and greater empathy for those who are most isolated and vulnerable. We are inspired by the kindness and dedication of our volunteers, and the generosity of strangers who have now become friends. The pandemic will end, but we will be stronger, together, through the compassion of our community.

FreshCo Donates $1,000 To Betel For Those In Need

On April 17, the Bernard Betel Centre received a generous donation of $1,000, twenty $50 gift cards to FreshCo, to distribute to older adults in needs. Thank you to Sam Coppa, Store Owner of the Steeles and Bathurst FreshCo, for his very meaningful donation. The gift cards will be distributed to those seniors in need during the pandemic.

CAA - A Responsibility To Do Something Good

Deemed an essential service by the Government of Ontario and able to continue their operations, CAA South Centre Ontario has reached out to organizations delivering front-line care to offer their assistance with the delivery of vital food and supplies. We are pleased to welcome CAA to our Meals on Wheels volunteer team and thank them for assisting in the delivery of meals to our most isolated and vulnerable seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you!
